Venice, Italy

“For many years, visiting the city of Venice, Italy has been at the top of my bucket list. Of all the places I might choose to go in the world, Venice had the most appeal.  As a photographer and as a tourist I find Venice unlike any other city, unique in character, history, and beauty. A city of water with no highways other than its canals and no modes of transportation besides boats and one’s feet, it is an amazing change to experience. A place of timeless ritual and beautiful decay, its residents go about life in a way that seems to have changed little over hundreds of years. Narrow streets and walkways lead through a maze of ancient buildings, across small bridges that span the labyrinth of canals. Venice is a city of stairs and churches; of amazing art and architecture; of swarms of tourists with cameras pointed in all directions; of quaint shops and small hidden restaurants; of open-air markets and people pulling wheeled carts; of amazing history at your fingertips. It is a magical place.”

– from the introduction to Venice MMXIV, by George Cannon, Imageguy Artbooks/Blurb

Classic Venice

Venice is a city founded in the 5th century, built on an island of millions of wooden pilings driven into the mud flats of the Venice lagoon, the city is rich with history, art, and culture. Once the ruling empire of the area, Venice was the hub of commerce and trade in the Mediterranean. With the current climate situation, Venice is in even more peril as sea levels rise. Already experiencing frequent floods, the city perseveres hosting tens of millions of tourists every year while the actual population decreases steadily.

Doors and Windows

Venice is a city of perpetual decay, but is constantly repaired, patched, and held together. History is respected, traditions maintained. It’s architecture displays the stresses of age and the elements. This collection focuses on Venice’s portals. Doors and windows are places of curiosity, inviting imagination. They are an opening to a story, a connection between public and private, a point of transition.
