Meet the Artist

Welcome and thank you for visiting folionline.com. My name is George Cannon. The imagery on this site is the product of my camera and my vision. I have been a photographer and artist for over 50 years. I grew up in the south, outside Atlanta, Georgia. I moved to the Northeast, eventually settling in Ithaca, NY. In 2023 I relocated to New Mexico. My first book was published in 1979. I have published 20 more since. My work is varied and different. It reflects my changes in life and interests and philosophy over time. My focus throughout has always been the creation of images that create a response. Pictures that allow the viewer the opportunity to build a conversation with the art. Create a narrative. Inspire imagination. Show the truth. Testify to our existence.

I am a self-taught photographer. My photographs have appeared in books and magazines and commercial advertising. I have exhibited across the country. I taught photography and design in adult education for ten years. I spent twelve years as a glass artist and retired from the Johnson Art Museum at Cornell University after sixteen years of service there. I have photographed nature and travel, portraits and head shots, fine art nudes, weddings and theater performances. I photograph architecture, and streets and towns and people. I am a witness and a story teller. In my spare time, I play guitar.

You can see additional work by George Cannon – Images at his web site and on Artwork Archive.

“Every photograph has its origin in the desire of the photographer to say something meaningful.”
